In Opus Magnum, we have been contacted by the grandchild of a notable CzA Czech scientist who, before World War II, hid the results of his lifetime work somewhere in his office. No surprise—the majority of the office was destroyed 80 years ago by a bomb. We had to navigate through time and space to uncover the secrets buried beneath the rubble, all while being cautious of the consequences our actions might have on the future.

The decorations suit the theme and the historical period well. The story feels a bit flat at first, but in the beginning, we didn’t pay much attention to that. We went through a couple of very fun and unique puzzles—the one with the rope was something I’d never seen before, and it felt great. All the time-travel shenanigans and discovering what had happened were cool… and then came the ending.

It felt:

  • Flat
  • Unworthy of such a cool room
  • Unsatisfying for the players

So yes, we ended up screwing up the world—even though we did what we thought was right. And apparently, the only way not to end this way is to recall some very vague piece of information and use a usually forbidden technique in escape rooms—like destroying something. I felt cheated. Maybe I’m just a whining bitch of a player, but if I leave feeling down, how exactly does that help your game?

Also, a very important note: if you book on-site, they’ll give you a decent discount. But if you book in advance (as we did—we reserved online and paid after the game), you won’t get the discount, because the booking already exists. The GM did her best and even called “the manager,” but he still said no. To be clear, we weren’t expecting a special promo just for our group. But when there’s a public offer and available slots, we figured it was fair to ask.

It really didn’t feel like they cared much about their clients—or at least, that’s the impression we got.

P.S. The puzzles were nice. Yes, there were some great puzzles in this room, so the weird felt even weirder in comparison 🤔
