Located in Baarn, hidden in a lush green park with cozy paths, ancient trees, statues, and fountains, it felt like stepping into a fairy tale. In the middle of the park, there’s a cafe in a giant glass house that looks surreal. Besides eating lemon tarts and drinking tea, which we, of course, did, you can play the first botanical-themed escape room we’ve encountered. The theme is no coincidence; everything in Wintertuin is related to botany, plants, and flowers. You can even buy succulents on the way out.

Uniquely, the rooms are actually two and identical. Even greater, they are glass-walled. Designed for team building, the teams can see each other but, of course, can’t hear each other. If you think that ruins the fun, you are mistaken as there are surprises on the way, set by the hosts. A lot of effort was put into this design, and it shows. I must mention that the room was initially available only in Dutch, but when we said we spoke only English, they committed to translating it. And they did. We felt like superstars.

Another epic host, a tall blond beauty, did everything possible to help us find his missing botanist professor. In the end, he gave each of us a small bottle gift filled with a green elixir of life. Generally, most rooms in the Netherlands give you a souvenir of some sort, as a token. It’s one of my favorite rooms of all time.
