History and rules:

The Puzzle Hunt CMU, is a biannual puzzle-solving event. Since 2007, the university has hosted two puzzle hunts annually—one in the spring and one in the fall semester. Typically consisting of approximately 20 puzzles, with a team size limit of 6 members, these hunts were originally 8 hours long until 2020 when they were extended to about a day to accommodate non-local participants. The hunt is mostly geared towards novice to intermediate solvers. Since 2019, a prepuzzle is released before each hunt, offering a thematic teaser in the form of a small puzzle. Moreover, from 2021 onwards, an annual orientation week hunt has been introduced, specifically for incoming freshmen, enhancing the puzzle-solving experience at CMU.
