Our first room in France was not just an adventure but also a test, clearly inspired by the board game Clue (Cluedo). Our game master, a great guy named Andy, brilliantly guided us through the quest to find out who killed Lord Cadaver. It had a classic plot with several suspects, a few potential weapons, and a “corpse” to inspect (or at least the crime scene photos).
Technically, I’d say there were pros and cons. The creators opted to use Zoom within the browser, and none of us were fans, especially considering that each of us has and can use the application without issues. Half of the options we’re used to were missing. Additionally, I didn’t have the choice to capture the entire team in a photo; I could only see the host’s camera and my own, hence the quality of the picture.
However, their inventory system was smartly crafted, and the items used disappeared from it, a convenience we’ve been looking for a long time in online escape rooms.
The “room” wasn’t linear, which, for me, isn’t convenient when playing online. In a physical room, it’s easy; each of us grabs a puzzle and solves it. But in this case, with the limitation of a single avatar focusing on one spot and tackling one puzzle, I’m not convinced it’s a bonus. The puzzles were engaging, and as a test game, I’d say they performed quite well.
