COVID-19 gave birth to some positive practices worldwide, including the presence of online escape rooms. Despite the model slowing down over time and physical visits returning to their positions, there are still excellent examples and games that are absolutely worth spending an hour in front of the screen.
Rise of the Fungi is one of those examples. Two years ago, we played their first “room” (I say “room” in quotes because their games are not escape rooms, neither a theater nor a musical, but they have their own genre of interactive performance).
The humor and artistry with which the game is made are splendid. Innovative and engineering solutions from a family that has built this venture in their garage. If you have the time and opportunity, after the game, ask to see how the whole thing is organized behind the scenes from a technical standpoint, it is very interesting. Just ask, and the hosts will gladly do it for you.
I’ll mention that all the songs in the games are recorded and produced by the creators and are available on YouTube. To this day, “I Put the Fun in Fungi” is my personal favorite. The puzzles during the game are on the simpler side, but the set designs, details, and the story are well thought out and captivating.
Rise of the Fungi introduces you to the story of how Paxillus becomes the Mushroom King, and I recommend playing The Keeper and the Fungus Among Us to follow the storyline.
